Recovered Clay

Recovering value from the fine material in hydrovac slurry.

Clay and fine soil make up another valuable material stream that can be recovered from hydrovac slurry.

At EcoVac's Etobicoke facility, clay is separated from incoming non-hazardous hydrovac slurry and processed independently from the aggregate, sand and water also contained in each load.

Where the appropriate requirements are met, this recovered clay can be directed toward reuse rather than treated solely as waste.

How Clay Is Recovered

Once larger aggregate and sand have been separated, finer material can be recovered and managed as its own stream.

EcoVac carefully processes and manages the recovered clay with a focus on producing material suitable for appropriate reuse opportunities.

Hydrovac slurry → Separation → Recovered clay → Appropriate reuse

This allows another component of hydrovac slurry to remain in circulation and supports EcoVac's broader approach to material recovery and landfill diversion.

Uses for Recovered Clay

Depending on project requirements and applicable specifications, recovered clay can be considered for applications including:

  • Clay liners

  • Cement additives

  • Brick and ceramic production

By separating clay from the larger hydrovac waste stream, EcoVac creates another opportunity to turn material removed from a jobsite into something useful.

One Part of the Bigger Picture

Clay doesn't exist in isolation within hydrovac slurry, and neither does our recovery process.

EcoVac separates incoming hydrovac material into four primary streams:

Aggregate. Sand. Clay. Treated water.

Recovering each individually allows us to find appropriate uses for materials that might otherwise be treated entirely as waste.
